Crosstown Throwdown at the DeltaPlex

Union High School will take on Ottawa Hills High School on the Grand Rapids Drive court before the Grand Rapids Drive play the Delaware 87ers. The Crosstown Throwdown will be the only time that Ottawa Hills and Union play each other during the season. The game also marks the first event in a new partnership between Grand Rapids Public Schools athletics and the Grand Rapids Drive. The Drive game will also feature a special halftime presentation about the districts’ attendance challenge. The campaign encourages students to “strive for less than 5” absences.

COST: Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Ticket includes admission to both games and parking. Advance tickets are available at the Ottawa Hills and Union athletic offices through noon Thursday.

3rd Annual Floyd Mayweather Classic

Ottawa Hills High School Athletics is hosting the third annual Floyd Mayweather Classic on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the Ottawa Hills High School gymnasium. The games will feature some of the top talent and teams from Michigan.

GRPS Announces Patricia Charity Elliott as New Girls Basketball Coach at Ottawa Hills High School

Ottawa Hills High School is pleased to welcome Patricia Charity Elliott as the new Varsity Girls’ Basketball Coach.
 
Coach Charity Elliott earned a bachelor’s of science and master’s of art from Western Michigan University, where she was also a standout player earning an honorable mention All-American in 1978 and 1980. She was also a member of the U.S. silver medal-winning team at the 1977 World Games. 
 
Coach Charity Elliott most recently served as Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator for Ohio University.  Prior to that, she held various head and assistant coaching positions at the University of Buffalo, Cal State Northridge University, University of Hawaii Manoa, Long Beach State University, and Western Michigan University.  In her positions at UNLV and Alabama, Coach Charity Elliott played an instrumental role in signing nationally ranked recruiting classes, as well as leading teams to three NCAA tournaments.
 
Ottawa Hills Athletic Director Marcus Harris stated “Coach Pat Charity brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion in coaching, and we are very excited to have her as our new girls’ varsity basketball coach.”

2013-14 Top 100 Sportsmanship Award

2013-14 Top 100 Sportsmanship Award

The Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) and BETTER BASKETBALL names the Ottawa Hills Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team as one of the recipients of the 2013-14 Top 100 Sportsmanship Award.

This is the 4th year of this award. The students, coaches, players and fans should be proud to be on the receiving end of an award for good sportsmanship during the basketball season. After each regular season girls’ and boys’ game, the basketball officials that worked the game were asked by the MHSAA to evaluate the sportsmanship of each school’s players, coaches, administrators and fans. At the end of the regular season these evaluation were ranked for all MHSAA schools. The top 100 schools for girl’s teams and top 100 schools for boys’ teams.

2 GRPS Players Named to Champions of Character All Star Team

Myles Miller, Ottawa Hills senior who signed with GVSU, and Rashaud Orange, Union senior who signed with GVSU, have been named to opposing teams in the annual Champions of Character All-Star High School Basketball Classic.

The game will be played at Cornerstone University on June 18. Tickets are $5/person or $15/family. The girls’ game is at 5:30, and boys’ play at 7:00pm.

Players are selected based on nominations and a review of area players and teams. Congratulations Myles and Rashaud!

He has been invited to the 3 point shooting contest at Michigan State during the state finals on March 22. Ottawa Hills Boys Basketball beats GR Christian and advances.

Ottawa Hills defeated GR Christian 62-57 to win the district championship.
Next Ottawa Hills faces Hudsonville at 8:00 p.m. Monday March 10th at Zeeland East in a Class A regional semifinal.

1 District seeks 2 District Championships

The Ottawa Hills and Union basketball teams got ready for their big games tonight with a wonderful breakfast prepared by the GRPS public safety team. The student athletes heard words of encouragement and motivation from Kurt Johnson, Executive Director of Athletics; Larry Johnson, Assistant Superintendent and Executive Director of Public Safety; Karl Nelson, Union High Principal; Marcus Harris, Ottawa Hills Athletic Director; Justin Walker, Union Athletic Director; and coaches Van Mayfield and Brandoen Guyton.
