THE SIX E'S
WHAT IS ECONOMICOLOGY

The term, Economicology, is a combination of the words economy and ecology. Coined by Peter Wege, it can be described as reasoned, respectful, engaged stewardship of the Earth household in service of both people and the planet. There are six guiding principles that drive the philosophy behind our program. THE "SIX E's ARE ECOLOGY, ECONOMICS, EMPATHY, ENVIRONMENT, ETHICS AND EDUCATION.

Opportunities
Excel at The Center for Economicology
Academic Excellence:
CFE is in the top 5% of all Michigan schools on combined measures of student achievement and growth over time. It is also recognized in the top 25 “Coolest Schools in America” by Parent and Child Magazine.

High-Level Activities:
Students at CFE participate in engaging hands-on activities including a daily sustainability brainstorm, a daily outdoor connection experience, discussion-based lesson design, soil/water sampling and analysis, and lab experiments.

Economicological Philosophy:
Students contribute toward a model of reasoned, respectful, engaged stewardship of the Earth through the six guiding principles of ecology, economics, empathy, environment, ethics, and education.

Project-Based Learning:
Students at CFE enhance their learning through projects that include field studies in environmental science, sustainability planning, environmental literature seminars, the Wind Power in Schools Program, and the Green City Design project.

Experiential Education:
CFE students go on two formative camping trips that serve as a crucial part of the innovative, hands-on CFE curriculum.

Rules, Safety, Discipline:
All GRPS schools provide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS). PBIS is a proactive, team-based framework for creating and sustaining safe and effective schools. Educators emphasize prevention of problem behavior, development of pro-social skills, and the use of data-based problem solving for addressing existing behavior concerns. The result is a fair, firm and consistent approach to rules, safety, and discipline.
