The Grand Rapids Special Education Department offers a full continuum of programs and services for students who qualify for special education. Special education services are available to eligible students from birth through high school graduation, or up to age 26, as appropriate. The Grand Rapids Special Education Department operates the Center-Based educational programs for students requiring highly specialized approaches and programs adapted to the severity of students needs throughout Kent County.
We believe we must improve student achievement for All students and develop a culture of achievement focusing on student learning. We provide comprehensive educational programs and services appropriate to address individual educational needs. We ensure that educational accommodations, modifications and supports are available so students with disabilities have access to a free, appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. We support the use of technology based tools and programs to enhance student learning.
Our Early Intervention Services coordinate an array of opportunities for infants and young children. Parents are able to access services for infants and young children with developmental delays and identified disabilities.
As students enter adolescence, transition planning prepares students for their adult opportunities.
